Double Cleansing with Micellar Water

I had never heard of double cleansing with Micellar Water before until my daughter (softoctobernight) told me all about it. Since I have really been trying to lift my skincare game lately and have gone back to using face masks again (read here), I decided to try this double cleansing routine out! I am so glad I did – I am definitely hooked!

What is Double Cleansing?

Double cleansing is a two-step process.

Step one, you use either an oil cleanser, an oil-based cleansing balm, or micellar water. This first step removes all makeup, sunscreen, and oil buildup from the day.

Step two, cleanse with a water-based cleanser using water to rinse off.

The first step allows the second step to perform a deeper cleaning, which is a really good thing! It means your skin is completely clean and ready for your serums and creams to be able to do their job properly.

You don’t have to double cleanse twice per day, but I do. Some say in the mornings it is not required since we haven’t worn makeup and sunscreen to bed. However, in the mornings I always first cleanse with micellar water,  I feel it gets all the oil off my skin (I am always surprised to see how much grease is on my skin from overnight) so that my water-based cleanser can do its job properly. It’s a personal preference.

For makeup days in the evenings, I use a cleansing balm or cleansing oil as my first cleanse, followed by a water-based cleanser. If however, I haven’t worn makeup that day I will simply use micellar water followed by a water-based cleanser.

I really feel like my skin is super clean, ready for my serums and moisturiser to go to work on totally clean skin.

What is Micellar Water?

My daughter and I watched Aimee Song’s cleansing routine on YouTube – Aimee used Garnier Micellar water, so that is what we bought (it is so affordable!).

This stuff really works! Micellar Water is made up of micelles, which are tiny little balls of cleansing oil molecules suspended in soft water.

How Does Micellar Water Work?

According to Garnier, “Micelles are an active cleansing ingredient which acts as a magnet to capture impurities, pollution, makeup and residue on the skin without vigorous rubbing.”

This stuff really works! Just soak a cotton pad or cotton wool ball in Micellar Water and gently wipe over the face, lips, and eyes. It’s great for removing eye makeup gently.

We have all had those nights for whatever reason, you just can’t be bothered with filling the sink up and dealing with water. I had one of those nights recently, so I used Micellar Water wipes and then Micellar Water (wipes by themselves will not remove all of your makeup) I was shocked at how much more makeup was removed using Micellar Water. I hate going to bed with makeup on, so if you are in a rush, Micellar Water is so good!
