Discovering The Luxury World of SLG’S – Small Leather Goods

Back in 2017, I had no idea what the abbreviation “SLG” meant. If you are like I was and have no idea, it means small leather goods. I shared a post in 2018 about my Chanel card holder and how in my spare time I paid for it, you can read that post here. At the time, I wasn’t sure if I would get used to a small card holder, compared to my larger traditional purse. However, fast forward to now and I wouldn’t swap my card holder for anything else! I love seeing my card holder every time I pull it out of my handbag. Since then, I have added another two small leather goods to my collection, and I would love to add more. I think it’s safe to say, I have discovered the luxury world of SLG’s, which my bank account would say is a bad thing!

Small Leather Goods

The small leather goods category includes much more than just card holders – here are a few examples:

  • purses
  • coin purses
  • belts
  • phone cases
  • cosmetic bags
  • passport holders
  • wallet on chain handbags
  • key holders

Card holders are synonymous with luxury fashion brands, however, I have noticed recently some are available at discount department stores. This is a great way to try an SLG out to see if it fits into your personal style, without having to spend a significant amount of money on a designer brand SLG first.

Transitioning from a big purse to a card holder

I definitely had to downsize the contents of my old purse.  I was ruthless with throwing away old store loyalty cards that I hadn’t used in years. The good thing about loyalty cards nowadays is most of the time you don’t even need an actual physical card, you just need to provide your phone number at the checkout – which is so much easier. Also, with so many apps these days most cards can be stored on phones.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t fit all of my cards into my Chanel card holder, but I could fit the essential cards in. For a birthday present in 2018, my husband gave me a Louis Vuitton Rosalie Coin purse. This purse fits the additional cards I have, plus some notes and coins.

For reference, I have seven cards in my Chanel card holder. There are two card slots on the back and one card slot on the front, plus the centre card section. In my Louis Vuitton purse, I have nine cards. It has a zip section for coins, and card slot sections, plus a big open section. This little purse packs a lot into it.

I also have an Oroton Liberty card holder for my public transport smart card, which is just lovely to use and keeps my travel card all safe and secure.

Are Luxury SLG’s worth it?

In my opinion yes, they are worth it. My card holder shows no signs of wear and tear, and I do not baby it at all, it looks as good as new. I can also resell my card holder if I need to. The way Chanel prices rise I could no doubt recoup most of my money back on it. I could probably even make a profit as my card holder was a limited edition in the colour Petrol Blue.

Purchasing a high-end SLG can be a relatively inexpensive way (as designer prices go!) to dip your toes into the luxury brand world. Because the prices are significantly cheaper for SLGs than designer handbags, this is a great way to familiarise yourself with a luxury brand first.

My Chanel card holder was a limited edition colour in Petrol Blue, which is now out of stock. However, Chanel does sell their Classic card holder year round in black and beige, which can be found here.

Vestiaire Collective have a few similar Chanel blue card holders, here, here and here.

My Rosalie coin purse is still stocked at Louis Vuitton and can be found here.

Unfortunately, my Oroton Liberty card holder is no longer available, but there are similar ones here and here.
