Toner Layering – How and Why To Layer Your Toners

I have talked about Double Cleansing and Serum Layering before on the blog, but have you heard of toner layering? I discovered this method from Annie on Instagram (@the_skincaretruth) she explained how she loves to layer her “I’m From” Rice Toner two to three times during her skincare routine. Since I am a huge fan of this toner (you can read a dedicated post about the “I’m From” Rice Toner here) I tried it out for myself and I loved it! I decided to dig a little deeper on the internet to find out all about toner layering. Here is what I have found, and how I layer my toner.

My Toner Layering Experience

I love learning new tips on skincare, and I always like to pass on what I have found to you. After reading Annie’s toner layering tip I was intrigued. I thought adding another layer of my Rice Toner wouldn’t hurt, so I gave it a go. I was pleasantly surprised and have not stopped toner layering since! My skin feels so hydrated and soft. Since then I have added another toner to the mix, Qyo Qyo Tangerine Bright + Moist Toner, which is working well too. Each morning I decide how my skin is feeling as to which toner I will double layer, or I apply one layer of each toner. I only double-layer my toner in the mornings at this point. Some mornings I even triple-layer if I feel my skin needs an extra boost of hydration from the Rice Toner.

The downside to toner layering is you will go through more product than usual!

The Korean 7-Skin Method

While researching toner layering the Korean 7-skin method kept coming up. And yes, it is layering 7 toners! To me, it seems a bit much, but never say never! Basically, this method is most popular in Korean skincare beauty routines. It involves using 3 to 7 toners and layering them one after the other. The idea is that with each layer of toner your skin absorbs it all in and the humectants in the toner work harder. Humectants are moisturising agents commonly found in skin care, they are known for their ability to retain moisture, so keeping the skin nice and hydrated.  It is said that toner layering can improve the skin barrier.

My Tips

  • As with any new skincare product or routine, introducing new steps slowly is the way to go.

  • Even though toners have really improved their formulations from their old astringent days, there are toners that have chemical exfoliants in them. I would think these toners may be too harsh to layer, I would advise only layering with a hydrating toner. The I’m From Rice Toner is very hydrating.

  • You don’t need multiple toners for toner layering to be effective. You can just use your favourite toner, as long as it is hydrating.

  • Always patch-test new products first for 24 hours before using them.

One thing to remember is that skincare is very personal, and what works for me may not work for you. If you decide to try toner layering I hope it works for you!
